What To Expect to Pay for Dance Lessons

Lots of newcomers to the dance world have the same question: how much will classes cost? Unfortunately there isn’t a short answer to this question. The price of lessons vary depending upon where you live, what style of dance you’re learning, the size of the class and the experience of the teacher. Still, there are some guidelines you can follow which will help you to put things in perspective when the time comes to cough up those tuition fees!

Studio Classes

Although prices are always on the up, keep in mind that a single class in a basic dance style lasting an hour or an hour and a half will generally cost you a minimum of between £8 and £15. This is guide price for a medium to large sized classes taught in a studio space in a city or suburb. Remember that the policy for fee-payment is different at every studio. Some charge daily or weekly, while registered classes sometimes have a monthly or annual fee.

For studios that operate on a walk-in basis, the price is usually split two ways – the membership fee and the price per class. More often than not, a studio will offer monthly or annual membership plans for regular attendees. A walk-in studio membership can cost anywhere between £50 and £150 annually. This means that when you attend class, you only have to pay the fee for the classes taken, which are usually £6-10. However, if you elect not to become a member, the studio will probably offer a daily membership. This means that each time you go you will be asked to pay an extra £1-4 upon arrival to become a member for the day, and then you’ll pay separately for whatever classes you choose to take. Children’s classes tend to be less expensive than adult classes, but many walk-in studios separate classes by level rather than age. Also, a quarterly or annual membership fee might be less if you qualify for a student, Equity, or unemployment concession.

Masterclasses and Competition Classes

As a general rule, weekend conventions, one-off events, or professionally taught masterclasses are more expensive than regular studio classes. These events usually require advanced registration and can cost anywhere between £25 and £100 per class. This does not include travel or accommodation if it is required. Similarly, you can expect to pay more than usual studio classes for classes which are geared toward competition or performance. This is because the classes are often taught by the most experienced instructors and the fees might include costume prices or entry fees.

Private Lessons

Hiring an instructor privately will provide you with one-on-one attention, but it is significantly more expensive than learning within a class. Still, many people benefit from being taught individually and often couples require private lessons for their wedding dances or other special occasions. While the rates for private lessons vary by instructor, they tend to fall between £50 and £100 per class. However, few instructors advertise their rates and you will likely be required to contact them personally.

The most important thing to remember is to do your research. Prices will always vary geographically and by institution so the only way to know if you’re getting the most for your money is to be informed. Price several schools or instructors before deciding on one and you’ll be more likely to find a class that fits your dance needs as well as your budget.
